Is a Roof Replacement or a Re-Cover Right for Your Home?

Most homeowners are familiar with the steps involved in replacing a roof, but many are unaware of roof re-covering as an alternative option.

Roof replacement is the process of removing all old roofing down to the decking and replacing those materials with new felt, shingles and flashing. This is typically recommended for aging roofs that may also have signs of damage, such as leaks, missing shingles or sagging areas.

A roof re-cover applies only to asphalt shingle roofs, and it involves applying a layer of new shingles directly over top of the old shingles. Re-covering an asphalt shingle roof is only recommended for roofs that are in good shape with no damage, and it can only be done once. If your roof has been re-covered before, you will need to have your roof replaced this time.

I Have an Asphalt Shingle Roof? Should I Re-Cover Instead of Replace?

If you have an asphalt shingle roof, reasons you might choose to re-cover your roof instead of opting for replacement are that it costs less because it requires less labor and materials. A re-cover is also typically faster and easier to complete and, when finished, it looks the same as a full roof replacement.
